Graduate Work Visa changes announced for late 2026
The government has announced two new work visa options for graduating student visa holders, which will become available in late 2026.
New short term Graduate Work Visa
- This is a 6-month work visa for those who have completed a NZQCF level 5-7 qualification, but do not qualify for a post-study work visa.
- This visa has open work rights.
- Graduates must have studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand and have at least NZD $5,000 to support themselves, among other requirements.
- English language, foundation, and bridging qualifications are not included.
Post-Study work visa eligibility extending to additional graduates
Graduates will now be eligible for a post-study work visa if they meet the below criteria:
- Have completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF level 7.
- Studied full‑time in New Zealand for the full duration of the qualification.
- Have been enrolled in that qualification for the full duration (cross crediting or recognition of prior learning is not eligible).
- Hold a bachelor's degree, completed in New Zealand or overseas.
The work visa may be granted for the duration the student spent studying their graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 1 year.
These changes aim to attract and retain international graduates with valuable skills, while maintaining education quality and protecting New Zealand’s international reputation as a great place to live and work.
